Why page speed matters for your Shopify store

+2s
Load time increase
Every extra 2 seconds increases bounce rate by up to 32% on mobile
7%
Conversion drop
Each 1-second delay reduces conversions by ~7% on e-commerce sites
LCP
Core Web Vitals
Google uses page speed as a ranking signal through its Core Web Vitals framework

Your choice of Shopify theme is one of the biggest factors in your store’s page speed. A well-coded theme can score 85+ on mobile PageSpeed. A bloated one might score below 50 — even with no apps installed. Start with a fast theme; it’s much harder to speed up a slow one.

How to improve your Shopify theme speed

Use compressed images

Convert product images to WebP format and compress below 200KB. Images are the #1 cause of slow Shopify stores.

Limit installed apps

Every app adds JavaScript. Audit your apps quarterly — unused apps silently slow your store.

Enable lazy loading

Most modern Shopify themes support lazy loading for below-the-fold images. Verify it's enabled in theme settings.

Avoid custom fonts

Each custom font is a blocking resource. Stick to 1–2 fonts maximum, or use system fonts for maximum speed.

Remove unused sections

Theme sections you've disabled still load their CSS/JS. Delete unused sections from your theme editor.

Use Shopify's CDN

Always serve images through Shopify's CDN (files.shopify.com) — never host them externally.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good PageSpeed score for a Shopify theme?

On mobile, a score of 75+ is good and 85+ is excellent. Most out-of-the-box Shopify themes score between 65–88 on mobile with no apps installed. Once you add apps, scores typically drop 5–20 points.

Are free Shopify themes faster than paid themes?

Shopify's official free themes (Dawn, Sense, Craft, etc.) are among the fastest available — they're built and maintained by Shopify's own team. Some paid themes like Turbo are also exceptionally fast, but not all paid themes prioritize speed.

Does page speed affect my Shopify SEO?

Yes. Google uses Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) as a ranking signal. A slow theme directly hurts your ability to rank in search results. Faster themes also lower bounce rates, which is a positive engagement signal.

How often are these pagespeed scores updated?

We test theme demos against Google PageSpeed Insights on a monthly basis. Scores reflect the theme demo with default settings and no installed apps.

Can I speed up my current theme without switching?

Yes — image optimization, app audits, and removing unused theme sections can improve scores significantly. However, if your theme scores below 60, switching to a faster theme will have a bigger impact than any optimization.
